2027: Coalition asks Atiku, Obi, others to declare full membership of ADC

The opposition coalition movement has directed its members to resign their membership of respective political parties and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The decision is part of the resolution of a closed-door meeting convened by the interim National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark, on Thursday.

The coalition also said it had decided to suspend every ongoing process for the registration of the All democratic Alliance (ADA), which it had earlier applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its registration.

According to the spokesperson of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, members of the party all agreed to support whoever wins the presidential primary of the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar confirmed his presence through a post on X, where he described the gathering as part of a broader resistance movement.

“I am currently at the stakeholders meeting of the Coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja,” his post read.

“It’s a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land.”

The former Vice-President emphasised that the opposition bloc is determined to present a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Those also in attendance at the meeting were a former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Ameachi; former Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai; former Anambra governor, Peter Obi; and former Sokoto governor, Aminu Tambuwal, among other top members of the coalition movement.

The coalition in July adopted the ADC as its political party, on whose platform it will wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

In July, Atiku resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, Atiku stated that his resignation is due to irreconcilable differences that have emerged within the former ruling party.

He also noted that he found it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which, according to him, diverges from the foundational principles it stood for.

Obi has, however, yet to officially defect to the ADC.
