In a decisive move, governors of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have vowed not to join any political coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This declaration followed a crucial meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, where the party’s governors gathered to chart their course for the upcoming electoral contest.
The governors, led by the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, issued a communique reaffirming their position on the matter, addressing widespread speculations about potential party mergers and coalitions.
The communique, read by Bala Mohammed, clearly stated, “Noting the nationwide speculations about possible merger of parties, groups and/or associations, the Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger.”
However, while rejecting such alliances, the governors left the door open for collaboration with like-minded individuals or groups.
“The PDP, as a major opposition party, welcomes any party, persons, or groups that are willing to join with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027,” the statement emphasized.
The governors also addressed internal party matters, including the controversial issue of the National Secretary of the PDP.
Reaffirming a stance first articulated in Asaba, they urged the appointment of a Substantive Secretary from the South East Zone, pending ratification by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in their next meeting.
They further emphasized their commitment to protecting Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, specifically by seeking clarity from the Supreme Court on the legal interpretation surrounding the declaration of a State of Emergency in any state.Online learning
This follows ongoing political challenges, particularly in Rivers State, which the PDP governors have openly opposed.
Solidarity was expressed for Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, with the forum reiterating its commitment to standing by him as his state faces the repercussions of a state of emergency declaration.
The governors condemned the growing security crisis in Nigeria, citing recent attacks in Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau States. Online learning
They called for a revised national security strategy that empowers state governments to play a more active role in defense and law enforcement.
Looking to the future, the PDP Governors’ Forum has outlined key steps for the party’s internal processes. A National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is scheduled for May 27, 2025, followed by the formation of a Zoning Committee to address party office distribution.
The PDP plans to hold a national convention in Kano at the end of August 2025, precisely on the 28th, 29th, and 30th. The newly constituted Zoning and National Convention Committees will be ratified by the National Working Committee (NWC) and NEC.
The forum also expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State for their warm hospitality during the meeting.
