President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on food security.
The announcement came as part of a comprehensive plan unveiled by the Tinubu-led administration during a media briefing held on Thursday.
Addressing the press, Mr. Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, emphasized the urgency of the situation.
He said “While availability is not a problem, affordability has been a major issue to many Nigerians in all parts of the country.”
Alake further highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the crisis, stating, “We are not unmindful of the rising cost of food and how it affects the citizens.”
Regarding the comprehensive plan, Alake said: “The plan aims to reverse the inflationary trend and establish a sustainable food supply system in the country.”
He emphasized the government’s determination to ensure the availability and affordability of food for all Nigerians.
Speaking on immediate interventions, Alake stated: “One of the key measures we are implementing is the immediate release of fertilizers and grains to farmers and households.”
He emphasized the goal of mitigating the effects of subsidy removal and stabilizing food prices.
Alake also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources.
“We are partnering with the Ministry of Water Resources to enhance irrigation practices to ensure year-round food production,” he said.
He stressed the significance of overcoming the limitations of seasonal farming and establishing a consistent food supply.
Elaborating on price regulation, Alake announced the establishment of a National Commodity Board.
He explained: “This board will play a crucial role in monitoring and regulating food prices, preventing sharp fluctuations, and maintaining stability in the market.”
He emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring affordable food items.
In terms of security, Alake said: “We are engaging the security architecture to protect the farms and the farmers so that farmers can return to the farmlands without fear of attacks.”
He highlighted the government’s focus on creating a secure environment for agricultural activities.
Alake noted that the Central Bank will continue to provide substantial funding to support the agricultural value chain.” He emphasized the importance of sustaining financial assistance to enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen the resilience of the sector.
He reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the food crises.
“President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food security underscores the gravity of the situation and the government’s unwavering commitment,” he said.
As the implementation of the comprehensive plan begins, the government calls on all Nigerians to support these efforts.
“Through a coordinated and united approach, we can overcome the challenges and usher in a future where food security is a reality for all Nigerians,” he added.
