President Bola Tinubu on Monday, June 24, in Katsina, emphasized the need for a stable and united North West region and a peaceful Nigeria.
He made the remarks during a two-day UNDP-sponsored Northwest Peace and Security Summit themed “Regional Cooperation for Securing Lives and Livelihoods in North West Nigeria.”
The president stressed the importance of maintaining a unified identity for the Northern part of Nigeria.
Represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shetima, he underscored that strategies to address security challenges inherited by the region are already in place.
He said: “We realised that achieving the peace we seek necessitates addressing the historical injustices that have torn communities apart. We must also reverse the institutional frailties governing security and the economic dysfunctions that create vulnerabilities to crime. We must also counter the ideological mischief that has pervaded the discourse of peace and security in the region’’.
“This perception extends past brothers and sisters across the Niger and reaches out far outside the shores of the nation. This unity is deeply rooted in culture and the bond of shared interests and common pursuits.
“Today, our presence here is a communal gathering to address the afflictions that have threatened the stability and unity of this great house. I am honoured to join you in reflecting on our path to extinguishing the fires we were elected to put out.”
He further stressed that the disintegration from cycles of clashes between herders and farmers has ruptured the ideas of oneness upon which the north revolved and was followed by a regime of cattle rustling that set herders on a path of violence.
While declaring an end to the present disturbing security challenges in the northwest, saying, “Enough is enough’’, the president tasked citizens of the northwest and the northeast to rise in the defence of the insecurity of the region.
Eminent Nigerians including former president Muhammadu Buhari, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, governors from the northwest, and some other northern leaders were also in Katsina.
