The Ogun State Government has shut down 45 religious and entertainment centres and sanctioned an additional 175 establishments for violating noise pollution regulations.

Ogun Commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya, made the disclosure in a press statement issued to commemorate the 2025 International Noise Awareness Day, themed “Protect Your Hearing, Protect Your Health.”

Oresanya emphasised the need for residents to communicate responsibly within their environment without causing excessive noise, noting that noise pollution remains a major environmental and public health concern.

“While communication is essential, uncontrolled noise is a nuisance that affects quality of life and poses serious health risks,” he said.

He reminded the public of the maximum permissible noise levels as stipulated by the state’s environmental laws: Residential areas: 50 decibels during the day, 35 decibels at night; places of worship: 60 decibels during the day, 40 decibels at night and entertainment and commercial centres: 60 decibels during the day, 40 decibels at night.

Oresanya urged households, community leaders, and operators of entertainment and commercial establishments to adhere strictly to these noise thresholds to avoid penalties.

He revealed that in 2024 alone, the government took action against 175 violators—comprising mostly religious institutions, entertainment venues, and commercial outlets—while 45 of them were completely shut down for persistent breaches.

The commissioner also appealed to Community Development Associations (CDAs) to adopt and enforce agreed noise limits within their localities.

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to promoting voluntary compliance through public enlightenment, stakeholder engagement, and moral advocacy.
