Amid growing public debate over street renaming across Lagos, the Eti-Osa Local Government Area has renamed six streets within its jurisdiction as part of a wider street naming and revalidation exercise.
This development follows recent backlash in the Bariga Local Council Development Area, where the former chairman, Kolade Alabi, renamed several streets after selected individuals.
The Lagos street naming sparked controversy particularly the renaming of the well-known Charly Boy Bus Stop to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop along the Oworonshoki Expressway.
The action was strongly criticised by prominent figures, including Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), who described it as “unconstitutional.”
In a public notice issued on Friday and signed by the council manager, Mrs. Oluwakemi Oshun, the Eti-Osa council announced that the new names take immediate effect. Residents, businesses, and the general public were urged to update their records to reflect the changes.
According to the council, the renaming initiative aims to reflect the cultural and historical identity of the area, while also improving navigation and data management.
The affected streets include:
Tony Amadasun Road (Igbo Efon), now Chief Femi Pedro Road
Dr. Udo Wogu Drive (Chevy View), now Chief Adebola Dosunmu Drive
Augusta Orji Street (Aro Ologolo Road), now Alhaji Adio Mayegun Street
Chike Mba Close (Osapa London), now Hon. Sikiru Ashorota Close
Ugochukwu Orji Street (Igbo Efon), now Barr. Wale Sanni Street
Fubara Dublin Green Street (Igbo Efon), now Rafiu Olukolu Street
The council assured that the exercise was conducted with due consideration for community relevance and urban planning needs.
