Troops neutralize two suspected terrorists in Ondo, recover weapons

 

Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed two suspected terrorists along the Akunu-Auga road in the Akoko area of Ondo state.

In a statement issued on Monday, Irabor Njoka, assistant director of army public relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, said the troops were alerted to the movement of suspected terrorists in the area on February 14, 2026.

Njoka said the suspected terrorists engaged troops in a gun battle, which led to the death of two armed men, while others fled with gunshot injuries.

The assistant director said the operation was carried out alongside personnel of the Ondo State Security Network Agency and local vigilantes.

 

“Troops acting on credible human intelligence regarding the movement of the suspected criminals within the area, swiftly mobilised and intercepted the suspects,” the statement reads.

“The ensuing contact with the armed elements, led to a firefight, where the troops superior fire power resulted in the neutralisation of two of the terrorists, while others fled with suspected gunshot wounds.

“Items recovered from the encounter with the criminals include; one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and 61 rounds of ammunition, three mobile handsets, a jackknife, torchlight, suspected illicit drugs, charms and the sum of ₦39,000 among other personal effects.

“The success of the operation highlights the Nigerian Army’s unwavering resolve to deny criminal elements freedom of action and movement, as well as to protect lives and property across Ondo State.

“The Brigade will continue to sustain aggressive clearance and exploitation operations, intensify patrols along identified criminal corridors and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders to ensure a secured environment for residents.”

On June 5, 2022, terrorists attacked St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo state, killing over 40 worshippers and leaving more than 100 injured.
