Kano APC receives new defectors
The All Progressives Congress in Kano State has reportedly received over 136,000 new members from various political parties, including prominent former elected officials, party leaders and other political stakeholders, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The new members declared their support for President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf during the inauguration of the Tinubu Support Group at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, pledging to mobilise support for the APC and work for the party’s victory in 2027.
Yusuf described the mass defection as a strong indication of the growing acceptance of the APC in Kano State, saying the development would further strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The mass defection is a strong indication of the growing acceptance of the APC in Kano State,” Yusuf said.
The governor commended the new members for their decision to join the APC and urged them to remain committed to the development, peace and progress of Kano State and Nigeria.
He assured the defectors that his administration would continue to work with stakeholders to promote unity, stability and sustainable development across the state.
“The collective interest of the people must remain the priority,” Yusuf said, stressing the need for unity and cooperation as the APC expands its political base across Kano.
Yusuf also urged the new members to join hands with other APC stakeholders to strengthen unity, peace and stability within the party.
He called on existing APC members and supporters to accommodate the new entrants, saying their participation would further strengthen the party at the grassroots.
The defectors, according to the statement, pledged to mobilise support for Tinubu and Yusuf, promising to work tirelessly to ensure the success of the APC in the 2027 elections.
They said their decision to join the APC was based on their confidence in the leadership of Tinubu and Yusuf and their commitment to supporting the development of Kano State.
Among the prominent politicians listed as joining the APC are Senator Rufai Sani Hanga; former Kano State Governor and Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya; former PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate, Yusuf Bello Dambatta; former NDC Deputy Chairman, Aliyu Datti Yako; former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Isyaku Ali Danja; and Senator Mas’ud El-Jibrin Doguwa.
Others include former Kano State NNPP Chairman, Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya; former NNPP Senatorial Candidate, Senator Abdulmajid Dauda Dandawaki; former Commissioner and Special Adviser, Senator Baraka Sani; former Ungogo Local Government Chairman, Muhammad Badaru Umar; and several former NDC and PDP leaders.
The list also includes former NDC Kano State Woman Leader, Amina Sirajo; former NDC Assistant Woman Leader, Hauwa’u Turaki; former NDC Chairman, Gezawa, Gambo Hamza; former NDC Chairman, Kura, Handanu Umar; and former NDC Director-General, Saminu Shehu Kura.
Also named were former NDC Youth Leader, Danladi Musa Garko; former NDC Auditor, Sahabi Garba; former Gwale Local Government Chairman, Sani Jibrin Dan Zara; former Makoda Local Government Chairman, Hassan Abba Makoda; and other prominent political figures.
The APC leadership welcomed the new members, describing their decision to join the party as a significant boost to its efforts to consolidate political unity and expand its grassroots support across Kano State.
The party urged its members and supporters to remain united and accommodate the new entrants as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
The new members are expected to join the APC campaign for the re-election of Tinubu as president and Yusuf as Kano governor for a second term.
The development comes amid continuing political realignments in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections, following Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the APC earlier in 2026.
Yusuf urged the new members to remain steadfast and actively participate in the APC’s programmes and activities as the party prepares for the 2027 polls.
