After suspension, ADC ward files suit to stop Ireti Kingibe from claiming membership

The Wuse ward executive committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has filed a suit at the federal high court in Abuja seeking an order to stop Ireti Kingibe, senator representing the FCT, from parading herself as a member.

The suit was filed 48 hours after the senator was placed on indefinite suspension by the ward executive committee over alleged anti-party activities, insubordination, and violation of party rules.

The plaintiffs in the case are Okezuo Kanayo, chairman of ADC in Wuse ward, and Isaiah Samuel, the ward secretary.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/539/2026, the plaintiffs asked the court to declare that the Wuse ward executive committee has the constitutional authority to discipline and suspend members within its jurisdiction.

The plaintiffs, represented by Maxwell Opara, also urged the court to affirm that Kingibe’s suspension remains valid and subsisting.

Among the reliefs sought is a declaration that the senator cannot lawfully parade herself as a member or card-carrying member of the ADC while the suspension remains in force.

The plaintiffs also asked the court to declare that the national working committee (NWC) of the party should not recognise the senator as a member at any level during the period of her suspension.

According to court documents, the suit was filed pursuant to sections 6(6)(b) and 251 of the 1999 Constitution, as well as article 16 of the ADC constitution and order 3 rules 6 and 7 of the federal high court (civil procedure) rules 2019.

The plaintiffs asked the court to determine whether the Wuse ward executive committee possesses the power to discipline and suspend a member of the party.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.
