CDS warns agitators, restates military’s loyalty to government

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has expressed delight over the uninterrupted democratic rule in the country since 1999.

He stated that he was pleased the military had remained in the barracks and continued to provide the necessary support to democratically elected governments over the past 25 years.

While reiterating the military’s loyalty to the democratic government, the CDS warned “incurable pessimists adopting a subversive posture and offering themselves as willing tools for destabilisation” to reconsider their actions.

Musa made this statement in his message to personnel to commemorate the nation’s Independence Day on Tuesday.

He said, “It is a joy to note that for the past 25 years, the Armed Forces of Nigeria has remained in the barracks while supporting the democratically elected government in leading the affairs of the nation. As we joyfully commemorate the 64th anniversary of our dear nation, we must salute our founding fathers who have contributed immeasurably to making this auspicious day a reality.

“We cannot help but remember their doggedness, resilience, and sacrifices, all predicated on an unfeigned love for our nation, which has enabled us to remain indivisible for the past 64 years.”

The CDS also reminded military personnel that, due to the responsibilities they bear, loyalty to constituted authorities and patriotism were critical and must not be overlooked.

He urged members of the Armed Forces to uphold their professional calling and ensure peace in the country.

“As we mark another phase of our nationhood,” Musa said, “I call on all members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to remain patriotic and abide by our professional calling to ensure peace and tranquility prevail in our beloved country.

“Owing to the great responsibilities placed on our shoulders over these eventful years, we cannot afford to pay mere lip service to the important issues of patriotism and loyalty to constituted authorities. As a nation, there are norms and values that bind us together, and if we make collective efforts to promote them, the nation will be better for all.”

Musa stated that in the ongoing fight against insurgents and bandits, the military had not disappointed the country.

“So far, the AFN has not let the nation down in its fight against insurgents, banditry, and other forms of criminality. While this assertion may sound clear, we still need to remind ourselves that all hands must be on deck in our collective efforts to curtail the insecurity bedeviling the nation.”

He, however, warned those planning to destabilise the country to reconsider their actions, adding that the military would not condone such behavior.

“Those who are incurably pessimistic about the well-being of the nation, adopting a subversive posture and offering themselves as willing tools for destabilisation, should rethink their actions, as the AFN will not permit subversive elements to have their way,” he stated.
