Electoral Act 2026: Ex- Legislators commends Tinubu, N’Assembly
The National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) has lauded Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) into law, describing the development as a major boost to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
National Coordinator of the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe in a statement also praised the National Assembly of Nigeria for what it called a timely and responsive legislative intervention that ensured the swift passage of the amendment.
“The National Forum of Former Legislators warmly commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for demonstrating leadership and commitment to democratic reforms by assenting to the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment),” the statement said.
“This action reflects the President’s resolve to continuously improve Nigeria’s electoral framework.”
The Forum further applauded lawmakers for engaging public concerns throughout the amendment process, noting that the final adjustments reflect a pragmatic approach.
“We equally commend the National Assembly for listening to the voice of the masses and civil society groups. The adjustments made strike a practical balance between technological innovation and the realities of infrastructure challenges in parts of the country,” it stated.
According to the former legislators, the amendment comes shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission released the timetable for the 2027 elections, providing clarity and predictability for political parties, candidates, and voters.
“The signing of this law well ahead of the 2027 polls gives INEC, political parties, and other stakeholders ample time to prepare within a clear and stable legal framework,” the statement added.
The Forum urged INEC to ensure transparent, consistent, and faithful implementation of the amended provisions, stressing that public confidence in future elections would depend largely on how effectively the new law is applied.
It also called on political parties and security agencies to discharge their responsibilities professionally to guarantee peaceful, credible, and violence-free elections.
“The success of the 2027 general elections will not rest on legislation alone, but on the collective commitment of all stakeholders to uphold democratic values and the rule of law,” the Forum concluded.
