To the excitement of the residents of Agboyi Island in Agboyi Ketu Local Development Authority Area, Kosofe, Lagos, a Drive- Through ceremony has been conducted on the newly constructed Agboyi link bridge.
The first vehicular movement on the bridge was conducted by His Royal Majesty, Oba (Engineer) Monsuru Abimbola Adekanbi Oladega, the 4th Olu of Agboyi. At 11:45 on Friday, March 15, 2024, history was made when Oba Monsuru Oladega drove his customized registered number plate SUV on the newly constructed Agboyi Bridge. In his entourage to perform the function were Oba of Oruba Agboyi, HRM Oba Taiwo Lamino Opeifa, and Chairman Agboyi Ketu Local Council Development Authority Area, Mayor Dele Osinowo.
After decades of yearning for a link bridge from the island, the project of the newly constructed Agboyi Link Bridge was initiated by the federal government, supervised by the Lagos State government, and recently concluded after about two years of its flag-off.
The historical Drive-Through ceremony was witnessed by the sons an daughters of Agboyi Island. Also in attendant to add glamour to the event were Whitecap chiefs, Baales and a number of traditioner rulers.
The engineer in charge of the project who was in attendance at the project’s Drive-Through, Akinlabi Sunday, explained in his remarks that the project was designed to come in phases and ultimately aimed at connecting Agboyi 1, 2, and 3 together. Also, he commended the people of Agboyi for their cooperation since the inception of the project.
The Olu of Agboyi, in his own remarks, thanked the federal government and Lagos State for the project. He promised the community would continue to support all Progressive Congress-led governments at all levels. In the same vein, the Chairman of the Agboyi Ketu LCDA, Dele Osinowo, also appreciated the federal government and the state government for the project. He was equally hopeful that the project will bring about a new Agboyi.
Also, in an interest- and emotion-eliciting manner, Chief Moshood Olasege, the Baba Oba of Agboyi, an Octogenarian, confessed that he was happy that the Agboyi Bridge became a reality in his lifetime. He went down memory lane on how the Agboyi Progressive Union proposed the construction of the bridge to the government during the defunct Western Region era and how successive governments promised to construct the bridge but couldn’t do so on account of the instability caused by the military coup. He went further to applaud Olu Agboyi for his steadfastness and resilience towards the accomplishment of the project in less than 5 years he ascended to the throne.
Giving the votes of thanks, Prince Oldega Ibrahim Kehinde, indigene of Agboyi who doubles as the former Special Assistant to the former Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila on Political Matters (South West), urged the people of Agboyi to continue to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu, giving assurances that the economic policies being implemented at the moment will yield positive results very soon. In the same vein, he admonished the people not to give up on giving all the necessary support to the government of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, just as he assured them of more development from the Lagos government.
