The Federal Road Safety Corps on Monday said a total of 5,081 people were killed in various road traffic crashes across the country in 2023.
The Corps Marshal FRSC, Dauda Biu, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja also noted that 10,617 road traffic crashes were recorded in 2023 and 31,874 were injured.
According to Biu, the crashes were caused by speed violations, overloading, continuous night journeys, and wrongful overtaking among others.
He also stated that five of its officers were knocked down by recalcitrant drivers, adding that two died in the process.
The Corps Marshal noted that the worrisome situation must be reversed in 2024 and beyond.
