Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged Lagos residents not to store up petroleum products due to the difficulty in buying fuel.
The governor, who gave the advice on Wednesday at the May Day celebration at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, said fuel was available and would soon circulate around the state.
He said the economic challenges were bumps on the country’s path to success.
Sanwo-Olu said his administration had always put the people first and would continue to do so.
“ This year’s theme, ‘People First,’ resonates deeply with our administration’s philosophy which is underpinned by our firm belief in prioritizing the welfare of our people. Through various measures, policies and initiatives, we have demonstrated that the interest and welfare of the people comes first and remains the ultimate goal of all our actions. Our response actions are geared towards mitigating the impact of these trying times and offer support to both our workers and citizens alike. We have been steadfast and intentional in implementing our social intervention programs, providing crucial assistance to those in need throughout the state.
“From subsidized food items through our Ounje Eko, and Eko Cares initiatives to incentives on social services, we have made tangible differences in countless lives. Healthcare initiatives that ensure access to quality medical services for all, transportation support, and educational opportunities for our children exemplify our commitment to creating a Lagos where everyone has a fair chance to thrive.
“Our dedication to putting people first extends beyond mere words. We stand by our labor unions and organizations advocating for workers’ rights and welfare. Together, we have achieved significant milestones in improving working conditions and ensuring fair wages and benefits, understanding that a thriving workforce is pivotal to our state’s prosperity.”
Speaking on various issues affecting workers’ welfare, the Chairperson of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Comrade Funmilayo Sessi said workers expected the announcement of a new minimum wage and not salary increase.
She called on the state government to beam its searchlight on work environment in private establishments to ensure to check discriminatory and anti-labour practices.
The NLC Chairperson called on the government to audit the Lagos State Water Corporation that had recently laid off nearly five hundred contract staff after ten years of service.
On his part, the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Gbenga Ekundayo, said it was disheartening that after the removal of fuel subsidy that fuel scarcity you could still bite hard.
Comrade Ekundayo urged the state government to address insecurity and the menace of land grabbing.
