Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government chairmen across the state.
The governor formally communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State.
In the letter, Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party leadership and members for the opportunity to serve under the NNPP platform since 2022, acknowledging the support and cooperation he received throughout his time in the party.
He explained that his decision followed prolonged internal crises within the party, stemming from leadership disputes and multiple legal battles currently before the courts.
According to the governor, the persistent disagreements have led to widespread disenfranchisement of party members and deep divisions within the party’s structure, creating uncertainty at both the state and national levels.
Yusuf noted that the internal cracks within the party appear increasingly irreconcilable, making it difficult to sustain unity and effective political coordination.
After what he described as careful reflection, the governor said he concluded that stepping away from the party was in the best interest of the people of Kano State.
He stressed that the decision was taken in good faith, without ill will, and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and the continued progress of Kano State.
The mass resignation, which includes federal and state lawmakers as well as local government chairmen, marks a significant political development in Kano State and is expected to reshape the state’s political landscape in the coming days.
