RHI Green Nigeria Challenge: Community category closes as Remi Tinubu calls for greater participation in household, state categories
The Community Category of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge has officially closed, with the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, expressing disappointment over the low level of participation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the First Lady disclosed that the Community Category, which closed on July 15, 2026, failed to attract significant entries despite its objective of transforming degraded community spaces, including dumpsites, landfills, and abandoned sites, into green parks, gardens, and other environmentally friendly spaces.
She commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, for the remodelling of the Abuja City Gate, describing the project as a remarkable example of environmental transformation and the type of initiative the Community Category sought to encourage across the country.
According to her, the revamped Abuja City Gate has become a notable landmark that reflects the vision of creating cleaner, greener, and more attractive public spaces.
Senator Tinubu urged state governments and communities nationwide to emulate the Federal Capital Territory by investing in environmental sustainability through proper waste management, the development of green public spaces, and regular clearing of drainage channels to prevent flooding.
She stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility and called on Nigerians to adopt environmentally friendly practices that would promote healthier and more resilient communities.
The First Lady, however, announced that the Household and State categories of the Renewed Hope Initiative Green Nigeria Challenge remain open and will continue to receive entries until December 20, 2026.
She encouraged households and state governments across the federation to take advantage of the opportunity by participating in the competition through the Offices of the First Ladies in their respective states.
Senator Tinubu reaffirmed the Renewed Hope Initiative’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and climate consciousness, urging Nigerians to embrace the campaign’s slogan, “Go Green Today for a Greener Tomorrow.”
She advised interested participants to visit the Renewed Hope Initiative website for detailed information on the competition guidelines and entry requirements.
