Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has sounded the alarm on the misuse of private jets in the country, revealing that some operators are engaging in illegal activities such as money laundering and drug trafficking.

Speaking at the Ministry of Aviation on Thursday, Keyamo highlighted the significant security risks and financial losses these activities have inflicted on the aviation sector.

Keyamo noted that certain operators are violating regulatory agreements by using licenses intended for non-commercial flights to conduct illicit activities.

While he did not name specific offenders, he emphasized the severe implications for the industry and national security.

In response to these challenges, Keyamo has established a Ministerial Taskforce Committee to oversee and regulate chartered flight operations across Nigeria.

The committee, led by Aero Contractors CEO Ado Sanusi, has been charged with conducting a thorough inventory of non-commercial flight operators. Their tasks include verifying professional licenses, ensuring adherence to regulations, and recommending disciplinary measures against those found in violation.

The eight-member committee has been given a three-month deadline to deliver its findings. This initiative is seen as a proactive measure to enhance regulatory oversight and restore integrity to Nigeria’s aviation sector, aiming to safeguard it from illegal practices that threaten economic stability and national security.
