Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has opened up about the bullying, rejection, and body-shaming he endured during his campaign to become governor.

He said this was an experience shaped not just by political rivalry but by prejudice over his appearance.

In an emotional post shared on Instagram,  Eno, who lives with albinism, said his opponents tried to weaponize his condition against him during the election season. But  he revealed that his greatest source of strength was his wife, who stood by him and affectionately called him her “golden boy.”

“When we started this campaign, some people, because they had nothing else to say, said they didn’t want an albino governor. But my dear wife came out and said, ‘To them you may be an albino, but to me, you are my golden boy,’” he said.

Adding, Eno said: “Albinos are a golden people, and they have a golden governor.”

He said, “They would body shame us. They would call us names. They wouldn’t let us come to the public. But today, God has brought us out. So wherever I see anyone living with albinism, I must recognise them.”

lbinism is a rare genetic condition that affects the production of melanin, resulting in little or no pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes. People with albinism often face stigma, discrimination, and health challenges such as vision impairment and sun sensitivity.
