Trump gives Iran 48-hour ultimatum to open Strait of Hormuz

United States (US) President Donald Trump has given the Iranian government 48-hour ultimatum to fully open the Strait of Hormuz without threat.

Following the joint strikes by the U.S. and Israel which resulted in killing of Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, over 175 school children and targeted different sites in the country, Iran in its retaliatory actions also announced closure of Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage for at least 20 percent of the global oil. Since its closure, Tribune Online reports that prices of oil and gas have since skyrocketed across the world.

However, President Trump in a post on Truth Social on Sunday, threatened that if Iran refuses to open the Strait of Hormuz in 48 hours, the United States will hit the country’s various power plants.

“If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST…” Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday.

This is coming barely 24 hours after the US announced temporarily lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil with officials saying the move is aimed at easing pressure on global energy markets rather than boosting Iran’s finances.

It was earlier reported that Trump, in a post on its Truth Social, had openly called on China, France and the United Kingdom (UK) among others to deploy warships alongside the US in securing the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump later disclosed that his administration had contacted seven countries about assisting in the mission but did not name them. However, the countries later rejected the call for action in the ongoing conflict.
