Wike wing of PDP fixes March for national convention

The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its long-awaited National Convention, in Abuja.

Also, the Board of Trustees (BoT), at an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting yesterday, reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional order, party unity and the rule of law.

The decision was taken on Monday at the 105th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC), which deliberated extensively on the state of the party, recent judicial developments and preparations for internal democratic processes.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, NEC said the convention would elect members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory organs of the party, describing the exercise as a critical step towards stabilising the PDP and repositioning it for future electoral contests.

NEC also approved a timetable for congresses nationwide ahead of the convention, with ward and local council congresses scheduled for February, while state congresses will be held in March.

The congresses are expected to culminate in the national convention, which party leaders believe will mark a decisive turning point in PDP’s protracted leadership crisis.

The committee mandated the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee to immediately activate convention sub-committees and commence full logistical, administrative and consultative preparations to ensure what it described as a transparent, inclusive and credible convention.

NEC further extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Committee as well as caretaker committees at the state and zonal levels, pending the conduct of the national convention and the respective state and zonal congresses.

Party sources said the extension was intended to provide institutional continuity and avoid a leadership vacuum as preparations intensify for the convention.

In reaffirming the authority of the caretaker leadership, NEC reiterated that the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led committee, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu as secretary, remains the only lawful national administrative organ of the party pending the election of a substantive NWC.

Referring to the declaratory judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, delivered in favour of the Caretaker Committee, Mohammed said the ruling was clear and unambiguous, adding that the committee would continue to pursue justice and stability for the party within the ambit of the law.

“Any moment from now, we shall roll out our timetable for activities relating to outstanding congresses in some states. This will usher in a seamless National Convention,” he announced.

In an address at the meeting, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, declared keen interest in all activities of the Oyo State chapter of PDP.

The minister insisted that his concern is solely focused on the survival, stability and success of the party nationwide.

Wike spoke extensively on the party’s internal challenges, the ongoing legal disputes and the path forward for rebuilding the opposition party ahead of future elections.

“Let me declare my interest clearly: I am interested in the survival and success of this party. I am also interested in all the happenings in the Oyo PDP. That is all I am interested in,” Wike said.
