2027: LP will not join Atiku’s coalition, says Abure

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has declared that the party will not join the coalition of opposition political parties led by the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

Abure said LP couldn’t be a part of such a movement, stating that those championing the coalition lacked courage, competence and character” to drive the process.

He stated this at the emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee of the party at the LP secretariat in Abuja, on Friday.

The LP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi and the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko, are key stakeholders in the coalition.

“The Labour Party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 general election. Instead, we will focus on rebuilding, repositioning, re-strategising, reconciling, and expanding our membership base to win the 2027 elections.

“I am making very clear that anybody from LP who is in talks on any coalition is on his own and does not carry the mandate of the Labour Party. Let us be heard loud and clear. Those aspirants masquerading and looking for coalition lack the courage, competence and character to drive the process.

“Leaders who can’t manage their political parties and deliberately create division cannot successfully drive any meaningful coalition. Probably we over-estimated some people. Forming a new party where stakeholders are expected to surrender their identity and structure requires strong leadership, which is currently lacking,” he noted.

The LP NEC reviewed the alleged anti-party activities of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti and others.

After what they regarded as actions unbecoming of a leader in LP, the NEC set up a disciplinary committee to decide the fate of the governor and others in the party.

Abure also voiced his concerns over Otti’s continuous attack and resentment of LP leadership, especially on national television, affirming that it amounted to anti-party activities remarks.
