Police begin trial of officers who demanded N100,000 from rape victim

Police in Imo State have commenced an orderly room trial of officers who allegedly demanded a N100,000 bribe from a 15-year-old rape victim.

Police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that a divisional police officer (DPO) and an investigating police officer (IPO) were summoned for questioning following public outcry.

The victim’s elder sister had uploaded a video on X detailing the incident, which prompted the police to investigate.

Okoye said the officers were later identified, arrested, and detained over “allegations of engaging in professional misconduct” in handling the rape case.

He confirmed that an orderly room trial is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12, 2026, in accordance with police regulations.

The spokesperson did not reveal the number or identities of the officers involved.

Okoye also said police have arrested the suspect accused of raping the girl.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Wisdom Onyeaju of Umuekweye, Irete in Owerri-West Local Government Area, was arrested following a tip-off from the victim’s family after the incident was made public via a viral social media video.

Okoye said Onyeaju is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, where he is undergoing a thorough investigation.

“Upon conclusion of the investigation, he will be arraigned in court with the appropriate charges,” he added.
