Abuse of naira: EFCC summons Okoya’s sons

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that no individual, regardless of their social status or affluence, is deemed untouchable. In a bold move, the EFCC has invited Subomi and Wahab, the sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, for interrogation in connection with alleged abuse of the naira.

The invitation follows a viral video that surfaced, showcasing the Okoya brothers spraying naira notes while a police officer held stacks of the currency, in clear contravention of Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007. This egregious display of disrespect for the nation’s currency has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from the public.

In response to the video, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) swiftly identified and detained the police officer involved, with Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson of the NPF, emphasizing that disciplinary action would be taken to uphold the integrity of the police force.

Following the arrest of the police officer, Nigerians took to social media to express their opinions on the matter, many called for the Okoya brothers to be arrested and held accountable for their actions. While some may have thought that the brothers would evade interrogation, the EFCC has made it clear that they will not be spared.

In an official invitation signed by Michael Wetkas, acting director of the Lagos directorate of the EFCC, the Okoya brothers have been directed to report to the head of the special operations team at the EFCC’s Lagos office by 10 am on Monday, January 13, 2025.

However, the EFCC remains resolute in its pursuit of justice, demonstrating its commitment to enforcing the law and protecting the integrity of the nation’s currency.

In 2024, the EFCC ramped up its enforcement of naira abuse by celebritries, citing Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.

On April 4, Bobrisky, the social media celebrity, was arrested by the commission in Lagos for defacing naira notes.

The crossdresser was arraigned on a six-count charge by the EFCC.

On April 16, the EFCC filed a three-count charge against Cubana Chief Priest, the socialite and social media influencer, over alleged naira abuse.
