Adamawa ADC chair urges to Atiku, Babachir to formalize membership

The Chairman of the Adamawa State chapter of the African Democratic Congress, Shehu Yohanna, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and other key figures to officially register as authentic members of the party.

Speaking on Tuesday, Yohanna disclosed that the former Vice President would be in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, for his birthday and other activities in his hometown of Jada Local Government Area this week.

“I spoke with the former Vice President on Tuesday morning after his arrival in Nigeria, and he told me he would be in Yola for his birthday celebration and the distribution of some items to people in Jada,” Yohanna said.

“I believe he will use the visit to officially register his membership and collect his card. I think the former SGF and other intending members will do the same to legalise their membership,” he added.

On the crisis in the state chapter of the ADC, Yohanna declined comment, stating, “The case is in court, so I will not comment to avoid contempt of court.”

The former Vice President had previously failed to meet the membership registration deadlines issued by the state chairman.

The initial date was set for August 2025, which was later shifted to September 2025, but the exercise did not take place, and no reason was given.

Meanwhile, Babachir Lawal, who has already inaugurated a parallel executive, said in August that Shehu’s allegations about his unregistered status were baseless and without proof.

“You can register online based on the ADC Constitution, which makes it flexible for people to join the party without travelling to their villages,” Lawal stated.

The Adamawa State ADC chapter is currently fractured into three different factions: the Babachir faction, the Shehu faction, and the Saidu Komsiri faction.

While Atiku has not officially identified with any faction, he did release funds to the Babachir faction, headed by Alhaji Sadiq Dasen, as a take-off grant.

On Monday, the ADC unveiled Atiku’s former campaign office in Abuja as its new national headquarters.

Speaking at the unveiling, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, addressed questions about the status of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and Peter Obi within the coalition.

“You are aware that former Governor Nasir El-Rufai and His Excellency Peter Obi have been given till the end of the Anambra election. Now, the election is done, so we expect that everybody will now come back together fully,” Abdullahi told reporters.

“The position of any of these leadership positions has not changed from the original position in the coalition and part of the ADC,” he affirmed.

The ADC has been pushing for all affiliates of the coalition to formally resign from their respective parties and register fully with the ADC—a directive that has been met with resistance from some key figures.
