After 15 years on throne, Supreme Court sacks Obong of Calabar

The Supreme Court has ordered the removal of the Obong of Calabar, Etubom Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V.

The apex court gave its ruling on Friday, ending a 15-year legal tussle over the throne after some members of the traditional council went to court over his installation processes.

Justice Akomaye Agim who read the lead judgement written by Justice Amina Augie upheld the judgment of the Appeal Court, Calabar.

He ordered that a fresh election be conducted in accordance with the constitution of the Palace.

In Suit No. HC/102/2008 filed by his lead counsel, Mr. Joe Agi, SAN, former minister of finance under late Gen. Sani Abacha, Etubom Anthony Ani, and others had sued Otu and others in their capacities as members of the Etuboms’ Traditional Council for jettisoning the screening process of Western Calabar.
