We ‘ll intensify legal reforms to protect women -Ajulo

Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo SAN, has restated the determination of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration to strengthen protection for women and promote their rights across the state.

Ajulo said the government remains focused on driving legal reforms, reinforcing institutions and creating opportunities that ensure the safety, dignity and progress of women.

He delivered the message on behalf of the Governor at the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ondo Week Dinner and Award Night held in Akure.

Addressing the theme, “Turning Policy to Action: Advancing Women’s Rights through Law and Governance,” Ajulo outlined recent joint efforts by government agencies and civil society groups to scale up awareness and advocacy against rape, gender-based violence and rising incidents of child molestation.

He noted that the administration has pursued the adoption and implementation of laws aimed at protecting women and children, adding that sustained commitment is crucial in the fight for gender justice.

Ajulo further stated that meaningful progress often emerges from organised groups like FIDA, even as government continues to champion reforms.

He stressed that achieving gender balance in leadership, governance and institutional development requires experienced women to mentor and groom emerging female professionals.

According to him, informed and united women are capable of steering the justice system towards fairness and accountability.

FIDA State Chairperson, Mrs Bolanle Olafunmiloye, in her remarks, urged collective action to halt the increasing cases of gender-based violence in Ondo State.

She called on the public to take a firm stand against abuses that endanger women and girls, insisting that perpetrators must be punished to guarantee justice for survivors.

Olafunmiloye also highlighted the central role of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies in arresting, investigating and prosecuting offenders under state laws and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act.

She appealed for stronger collaboration between government, private organisations, civil society groups, religious institutions and individuals to address the growing challenge.

She added that deeper women’s involvement in leadership would enhance advocacy efforts and create better outcomes for women and children.

The ceremony also featured the investiture of the State Governor as Patron of FIDA and the presentation of awards to several distinguished personalities for their contributions to justice and women’s empowerment.

Honourees include former Governor Olusegun Mimiko; State Commissioner of Police, CP Lawal Adebowale; State Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, CIS Felicia Amaka Anara; the State Chief Judge, Justice Odusola and pioneer FIDA Chairperson and former Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Adesola Adeyemi-Tuki, among others.
