Residents of Akure, the Ondo state capital have staged a protest against the poor condition of the Akure-Ado road.

The residents of Igoba community in the state capital lamented the negligence of the road by the Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and his Ekiti State counterpart Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Earlier in 2019, Akeredolu disclosed that the Ondo State government and the Ekiti State government had agreed to construct the Akure/Ado Ekiti road.

The residents of the community in the early hours of Tuesday expressed their displeasure over the poor state of the road.

Speaking to WesternPost, some of the protesting residents decried the economic hardship it has brought to them.

One of the protesters, Mr Paul Kolawole expressed bitterness about the present state of the road.

He said, “This road has been neglected for years and the government is not doing anything. It is affecting us and I want to appeal to the government to come to our aid.”

One of the drivers plying the road when the protest was on, Mr Kehinde Bamidele, said the road was draining his finances and begged the government of Akeredolu and Fayemi to find a lasting solution to the road.

“The road is causing me extra expenses. I have to repair my car from time to time because of the bad road. Despite the little we earn from passengers travelling, we divert a larger percentage of it to repair our vehicles.

“Governor Akeredolu, Fayemi, and the Federal government need to come to our aid. We are tired of the look of this road,” he said.

In 2020, Akeredolu said the ongoing dualisation of the Akure-Ado road project will be completed soon.

He said, “We have commenced the dualization of Akure-Ado road, by this, travellers plying this route will be in comfort. Our projects are apparently obvious to all and sundry, so will help the susceptible out of penury.”
