Borno: Troops repel ISWAP attack on military base
Troops of the Nigerian Army have repelled an early-morning attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a military base in Doron Baga, Kukawa LGA of Borno state.
According to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the insurgents stormed the base at about 2:12 am on Tuesday, sparking a fierce gun battle that lasted for roughly 55 minutes.
“Troops stood their ground and maintained tactical dominance throughout the engagement, which ended around 5:50 a.m,” Makama said.
Security sources said several terrorists were killed during the encounter, while troops recorded no casualties or equipment losses.
“Troops said that follow-on operations and patrols are ongoing to prevent any resurgence of terrorist activity in the area,” Makama said, adding that soldiers and other security operatives have been urged to remain vigilant and sustain heightened security measures.
The attack is the second targeting a military base in Kukawa within a week.
On Monday, ISWAP fighters killed a commanding officer of the Nigerian Army during another assault on a military facility in the same area.
