CONYSSA, a noble youth organization on safety and security affairs has sent a passionate appeal to the Senate President, Sen. Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila over the need to fast-track the passage of the bill to establish the Nigerian National Commission against the Proliferation of Small Arms, Ammunition, and Light Weapons, into law.

While addressing the pressmen in Abuja on Thursday, February 3, 2022, the Director-General of the youth group, Ambassador Ade Mario Emmanuel lauded the leadership of the 9th National Assembly for committing themselves to passing remarkable bills that suit the interest of Nigerians which demonstrates their visionary and inspiring deeds and responsibilities attached to the offices they hold respectively.

Ambassador Ade, however, noted that in like manners, the leadership of the 9th assembly should stay committed to the wills, gains, and hope of Nigerians that have been invested in the establishment of the Commission.

He said; “the establishment of the commission is nothing else but a strategic way of creating an avenue for responsible youths who still have the agility and the ability to combat insecurity through the channels while they remain gainfully employed. I strongly believe that the accelerated passage of this bill should be the major concern of our representatives as the establishment of the commission will stand to gainfully employ the youths in our massive numbers while the issue of insecurity isn’t left unaddressed”

“Additionally, if established, the commission will serve as a veritable grassroots information gathering mechanism that will be useful for intelligence gathering by the Nation’s Security Apparatus with little or no financial reliance on the national purse.”

Ambassador Ade equally pointed out that Nigeria is a party to the African Union Treaty on Firearms and Light Weapons, and while other Nations have domesticated and established institutions in this regard, Nigeria remains passive on the matter, hence, putting the country in negative international light, against our status as the Giant of Africa.

As of utmost importance, Mr. Mario added that; CONYSSA being the most robust youths’ organization on safety and security affairs in Nigeria, we have adequate information on the shortage of manpower to tackle insecurity in the country, hence we passionately appeal that this bill is passed into law swiftly to curb the illegal inflow of firearms into the country by some criminals which has placed the security of the country on serious risk.”

The DG of CONYSSA appeals to President Mohammadu Buhari to use his powers in seeing to the success of the bill- when it is passed, assented to, and consequently established to perform its roles; and to also look into the plight of CONYSSA at the number 16 of the communique raised at the Nigerian Youth Stakeholders Summit.

Lastly, he said; “more importantly, apart from N-Power, the establishment of this commission will stand as another major assignment of his administration which will not only applaud responsibilities of President Buhari for giving back to the youths’ constituency but also address the issues whereby our youths sweep different streets in Nigerian with their legs when they are jobless, of course.
