C’River suspends scrap trading for six months over rising vandalism

Cross River State government has announced a six-month suspension of all scrap-related activities across the state, following what it described as an alarming increase in vandalism, theft and destruction of public and private property.

In a release dated February 23, the government said investigations and security reports established a direct link between the activities of scrap dealers and the growing incidents of damage to critical infrastructure.

The statement, signed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ededem Charles Ani, said essential public assets, including utilities, road installations and community facilities had been deliberately targeted, resulting in service disruptions, economic losses and heightened threats to public safety.

Governor Bassey Otu approved the immediate suspension as an interim measure pending a comprehensive review of existing laws, policies and regulatory frameworks governing scrap-related operations in the state.

The suspension covers all forms of scrap dealing, including trading, scavenging, transportation and any related operations within, into or out of the state.

The government warned that any individual, group or entity found violating the order will face legal sanctions, adding that law enforcement agencies and relevant security bodies had been mandated to ensure strict compliance.

It said the measure was necessary to halt further damage, restore order and safeguard both public infrastructure and private assets, while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents.

The government called on residents, stakeholders and lawful business operators to cooperate with authorities during the suspension period.
