Oyo State has a new Commissioner of Police. CP Femi Haruna assumed duty on Tuesday as the 48th officer to lead the state police command.

His appointment comes days before the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Haruna formally took charge at the Oyo State Police Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, where he addressed senior officers and stakeholders during a brief inauguration ceremony.

In his maiden address, the new commissioner pledged to consolidate on achievements of his predecessor, with a renewed focus on crime reduction and strengthening security across the state. He empemphasisedcommunity-driven approach to policing and encouraged active public cooperation.

“The police under my watch will work tirelessly in collaboration with other sister security agencies and residents to ensure that the state remains safe and secure,” he said in an interview with journalists. “We encourage members of the public to promptly report any suspicious activity, and I assure you that the police will act swiftly and decisively.”

Haruna commended his predecessor, Johnson Adenola—who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police—for his notable efforts in improving the state’s security framework. He also lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for his consistent support in enhancing the state’s security architecture, describing the governor’s role as “commendable”.

The timing of Haruna’s appointment is considered strategic, as it precedes a crucial by-election to fill the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat left vacant by the death of two-term lawmaker Hon. Musiliudeen Akinremi (popularly known as Jagaban) in July 2024.
