Senator Ahmad Lawan, President of the 9th Senate and representative of Yobe North Senatorial District, has denied reports suggesting he is set to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In a statement issued on Sunday by his media adviser, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, Senator Lawan described the claims as “false, baseless, and without merit.” He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the APC, stating that he remains a key stakeholder in the party and will continue working towards its success.
“For the record, throughout his twenty-five years in the National Assembly, Senator Ahmad Lawan has never defected from one party to another,” the statement read.
It recalled that he was first elected into the House of Representatives in 1999 under the All People’s Party (APP), which later became the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). The ANPP subsequently merged with other opposition parties in 2013 to form the APC, and since then, he has remained steadfast in his loyalty.
The senator also reiterated his support for Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, commending his leadership and commitment to good governance. He pledged continued collaboration to advance the state’s development agenda.
Furthermore, Senator Lawan expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, endorsing its policies and reforms aimed at transforming Nigeria.
The statement urged the public and APC supporters to disregard the defection rumors, attributing them to “mischief-makers” attempting to create distractions for political motives.
“Senator Ahmad Lawan remains focused on his responsibilities as a lawmaker and leader, and he is fully committed to supporting the APC-led administration in delivering good governance and sustainable development to Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
