Funmi Aragbaiye @72: A Voice That Continues to Inspire Generations –By Bimbo Esho
My first encounter with Evangelist (Dr.) Funmi Aragbaiye was sometime last year when I reached out to inform her about a prestigious recognition our company, *Evergreen Musical Company*, was organizing in partnership with the *Lagos State Government*. True to our philosophy of honouring excellence based solely on merit and genuine achievement, we unanimously chose to *celebrate a woman whose life has been defined by grace, impeccable character, and unwavering commitment to both the Christian faith and the Nigerian music industry.*
For over four decades, Evangelist (Dr.) Funmi Aragbaiye has built an enviable reputation, not only as one of Nigeria’s *foremost gospel music ministers but also as a distinguished journalist and accomplished civil servant*. Through her remarkable journey of service, she has consistently demonstrated the values of diligence, discipline, integrity, and steadfast devotion to her divine calling. Her life remains a compelling testament to what can be achieved through faith, perseverance, and purpose.
Her calling into gospel ministry dates back to the early 1970s when she received divine inspiration while worshipping at the ECWA Church in Ilorin. That spiritual encounter laid the foundation for what would become one of the most impactful gospel music ministries in Nigeria. *In 1985, she released her debut album on the Decross Label, introducing the timeless classic “Olorun Igbala,” alongside another memorable song, “Sioni O Ilu Ayo.”*
The release of “Olorun Igbala” marked a defining moment in Nigerian gospel music. The song resonated across churches and homes, instantly establishing Funmi Aragbaiye as a household name and one of the nation’s most beloved gospel ministers. Over the years, she has continued to bless generations with inspiring *songs such as “Emi Orun S’Okale,” “Mo Gbo Ipe Olorun,” “Ijoba Orun Kudede,” and “Peace in Nigeria,” *among many others. These songs remain enduring expressions of faith, hope, and spiritual encouragement.
*Beyond her exceptional vocal gift, Evangelist (Dr.) Funmi Aragbaiye brought professionalism, refinement, and dignity to gospel music performance. At a time when gospel music was still finding broader acceptance, she helped elevate its presentation to the highest levels of society, combining spiritual depth with uncommon elegance and excellence. Her influence has inspired countless gospel musicians to pursue both ministry and professionalism with equal passion.*
Graceful, articulate, and distinguished, she has remained a symbol of excellence throughout her career. Her consistency, humility, and uncompromising values have earned her the admiration of colleagues, fans, and younger generations alike. *She stands today as a worthy role model for every aspiring female gospel artiste who desires not only success but also a legacy built on character, faith, and service.*
As Evangelist (Dr.) Funmi Aragbaiye celebrates her 72nd birthday, we honour a woman whose voice has transcended music to become a source of hope, inspiration, and spiritual awakening. We celebrate a life of uncommon impact, remarkable achievements, and enduring service to God and humanity.
Happy 72nd Birthday, Ma. May your latter years be even more glorious than the former, and may your legacy continue to inspire generations yet unborn.
