Gov. Ganduje Cuts Emir of Kano into Sizes…How Sanusi’s Unbridled Tongue Put Him into Trouble

Popular belief that anything done in excess has grave consequences aptly describes the situation in which Emir of Kano, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has found himself as he may have paid a grave price for his penchant to being in the news at the expense of others. In the course of taking a swipe at others in the name of a critic or an activist, Sanusi, no doubt has endeared himself to many who believe his positions are often very accurate to be faulted.

It will be recall Sanusi, during his reign as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria under the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan, at interval took a swipe at the administration as well as made accusations of financial irregularities against the administration. As earlier stated, this act made him popular among Nigerians, more so, that the administration at that time had become unpopular on account of its perceived financial recklessness.  However, findings eventually showed Sanusi actually goofed in some of his accusations but his errors were never pronounced based on how the Jonathan administration edged him out of office in a controversial manner. The fact that his constant criticism of the government was to advantage of the opposition whose members rallied round him when he was given a bout out office and ensured he was crowned the Emir of Kano against all odds, all covered his inadequacies.

Apparently for his unrepentant attention seeking nature, Sanusi, as an Emir continued to take swipes at institutions and individuals for various self induced reasons. It will be recall he generated a mixed reaction sometime ago when he condemned the North for making marriage a priority for girl child rather than education. Some northern leaders frowned at his public display but not ready to soft pedal, Sanusi eventually took squarely on the government of Kano as presently headed by Governor Abdulahi Ganduje.  At different occasions, Sanusi hit Ganduje all in the name of providing economic clues. He once criticized Ganduje of spending weeks in China on account of looking for investors but ended up returning empty handed. His stances on the governor’s economic policies have often given out Ganduje as an empty headed leader who has no idea about how to make life better for his people.

In his attempt to retaliate Sanusi’s untoward utterances against him, Ganduje made effort to remove him from the throne but powerful individuals like Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida, richest black man, Aliko Dangote, Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo as well as some northern governors among whom was Mallam Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, prevailed on Ganduje to drop the plan to remove Sanusi even as the two were reconciled. Meanwhile, one of these individuals who brokered peace and saved Sanusi’s head in the person of Dangote was said to have at a time been a victim of Sanusi’s unbridled tongue. Sanusi was said to have said it in a gathering that had Dangote that despite having many rich people in Kano, poverty was still rampant among Kano people. Dangote, a great philanthropist, it was said felt very embarrassed and felt it was unfair for the Emir to have said that while he was present even as it is verifiable he’s never relented in giving back to the society.

After that episode, many had thought the Emir would adhere to the tenets of  traditional institution  whose arrow head  is expected to be a father to all and not take sides, especially as it concerns partisan politics, but events that unfolded have shown  such expectations only ended a mere wish as Sanusi did not seem to have learnt his lessons. This time, particularly towards the concluded elections, the Emir was perceived to have gone as far as making his body language so obvious that that it was clear he was against the re-election of Ganduje for another term. He got so much involved that that when Ganduje eventually got his victory after the rerun, many Kano indigenes trooped to the streets to uproot and destroyed whatever that had the Emir’s picture or touch. Sanusi’s woes got compounded when the movers and shakers of Kano like the Madakis and the rest allegedly approached the governor to remove the Emir on the excuse that he was constituting a nuisance and as such desecrating the revered Kano emirate.

Having been pushed to the wall, Ganduje has eventually dealt a blow on Sanusi by reducing his powers and influence as Sanusi‘s royal empire has been divided into five. The governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje has given assent to the bill passed by the Kano House of Assembly on breaking up the emirate in the state. Kano now has five emirates namely, Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi,

However, if what birds in the know are singing to JustNews is anything to go by, the treatment metted at Sanusi might just be a tip of the iceberg as more stiff policies that may further cage Sanui are said to be likely brought forward even as a probe has been initiated into alleged financial improprieties against the Emir.

In what look like a succor to the Emir in a trying period such as this, Sanusi just got an international appointment as Sustainable Development Goals Advocate.   United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, announced His Royal Highness, Mohammadu Sanusi 11, among 16 other influential figures around the world as Sustainable Development Goals Advocates. They are saddled with the agenda to drive global development to a new height.
