Group tips Muri-Okunola for Lagos gov
A group within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, the Action Grassroot Alliance for Hakeem Muri-Okunola, has declared support for the Principal Secretary to the President, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The Director-General of the group, Mrs Salewa Adegbenro, stated this on Saturday during a press briefing held in Ikeja.
Adegbenro said, “The future of Lagos will be brighter under his leadership. We stand today to encourage him to answer the call of the people and step forward to serve Lagos State as governor in 2027, for the continued progress, unity and prosperity of our great state.”
Also speaking at the event, the media director of the group, Ziggy Ibeh, described Muri-Okunola as a competent political figure “who will steer the wheel of the state in a positive direction.”
He added that if the former Lagos State Head of Service “becomes governor of the state, he will build on the legacies of the present governor whose tenure will elapse in 2027.”
Although Muri-Okunola has not formally announced his candidacy for the 2027 Lagos governorship election, there have been speculations about his political future.
He voluntarily retired in February 2026 to begin a new journey and has served under President Bola Tinubu for many years.
He was a Personal Assistant to Tinubu when he was governor of Lagos State and is considered a member of the President’s inner circle.
Earlier in the week, Tinubu directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments on or before March 31.
Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers to the President, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies, as well as other political appointees of the President.
