Salawa Abeni recalls how Tinubu sponsored her Dubai trip during health struggles, shares stories at 50 years on stage celebration

The Queen of Waka music, Salawa Abeni, has recounted how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came to her aid during a difficult period in her life when she was battling health challenges and financial difficulties.

The veteran singer shared the experience while speaking at her recently concluded 50 years on stage celebration, where she praised Tinubu for his support for the Nigerian entertainment industry even before he became president.

During the star-studded event, Salawa Abeni recalled losing her child, a painful experience that left her emotionally devastated and affected her health and finances.

According to the singer, her condition deteriorated to the point where she could barely walk without the assistance of a walking stick. She said she had no one to turn to for help during the difficult period, prompting her to seek assistance from Tinubu, who was then a prominent political figure in Lagos State.

Recounting how she visited his residence at 26 Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, the singer said she was asked to sit down while waiting for him to come out.

Salawa Abeni explained that when Tinubu eventually appeared, he initially struggled to recognise her because of the significant changes in her physical appearance caused by her health condition.

She said that after seeing her condition, Tinubu immediately contacted the then Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, and asked him to arrange a flight for her to Dubai the following week so she could receive medical attention.

The singer recalled the gesture with gratitude, highlighting how the intervention came at a time when she was struggling to cope with her health challenges.

Beyond Tinubu, Salawa Abeni also acknowledged the support she had received from popular transport union leader MC Oluomo over the years.

Recounting her experiences while living in Magodo, Lagos State, the veteran musician said MC Oluomo would respond whenever she contacted him for assistance during periods when she had no shows and was experiencing financial difficulties.

She showered praises on him during her performance at the celebration, acknowledging his presence and continued support over the years.

Meanwhile, Salawa Abeni’s account adds to previous testimonies from Nigerian entertainers who have publicly acknowledged Tinubu’s financial assistance during difficult periods.

Veteran Nollywood actor Yinka Quadri had previously recalled how Tinubu donated $25,000 to help bring home the remains of actress Moji Olaiya, after members of the industry sought $15,000 for the arrangements.
