Ex-Portugal international who doubles as ex-Real Madrid star, Luis Figo, has lent his voice to the growing demand for the resignation of FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino. The Italian, Infantino, incurred the wrath of football stakeholders and lovers all over the world following his attempt to sell some of the World Cup commercial rights to private investors. Stakeholders perceived the move, which attracted wide resistance, as a move that was meant to spell doom for soccer.
Below is the text of Figo’s message as posted by soccer news authority, Fabrizio Romano:
Luis Figo: “Today, I join other people from all corners of our game to demand the resignation of Gianni Infantino from his position as FIFA president.
Infantino has degraded the position he promised to elevate. HE LIED, DECEIVED, AND TRIED TO SERVE HIS OWN INTERESTS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE GAME HE IS SUPPOSED TO SERVE…
He has lost the support of his senior staff, his closest advisors, the vast majority of people who dedicate their lives to this sport, and even the recipient of the FIFA award for sports for peace.
It is too late to save his dignity, BUT IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO SAVE FOOTBALL. HE SHOULD GO. NOW.”
