Lagos govt arraigns 100 suspects for disturbing VI, Lekki

The Lagos State Government has arraigned more than 100 suspects before the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, over alleged breach of public peace and other offences in the Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah areas.

According to a statement by the state government on Monday on its official handles, the defendants were also charged with unlawful conversion of government property to personal use and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.

The prosecution, led by Oluwabusola Omotunde on behalf of the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said the defendants were arrested between 2am and 4am on Friday, September 4, 2026, across the Victoria Island-Lekki-Ajah axis.

She said the charges preferred against the defendants included breach of peace and unlawful conversion of government property to personal use.

During the arraignment, some of the defendants pleaded guilty, while others pleaded not guilty.

Presiding over the proceedings, the Chief Magistrate of the Mobile Court, F.J. Adefioye, emphasised the need for deterrence while upholding due process.

The magistrate sentenced the defendants who pleaded guilty to Counts I and II to one and two months of community service or imprisonment, respectively.

The sentences are to run consecutively.

Those who pleaded not guilty were remanded and granted bail with two sureties each.

The Coordinator of the Mobile Court, Olufemi Adekunle, affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order while protecting legitimate businesses and residents within the state.

He said, “similar Mobile Court sittings will continue across the state to ensure that offenders are prosecuted promptly and that public spaces remain safe for all.”

The development comes as the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court continues to handle public order, environmental, traffic and other offences under its mandate.
