Nasarawa senator Godiya Akwashiki dies in India hospital
Godiya Akwashiki, senator representing Nasarawa north, has died in India after a prolonged illness.
Akwashiki, elected under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was 52 years old.
According to NAN, a family source said the lawmaker passed away on December 31, 2025, at a hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
The source described his death as a “big blow” for Nasarawa north and the state at large.
He added that the late senator’s dedication to development, infrastructure, and human empowerment set him apart throughout his political career.
“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Sen. Akwashiki was the best senator Nasarawa North ever produced due to his purposeful leadership,” the source said.
“His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency, as he was the only senator that re-contested and won a second term in the zone.”
Before his election to the senate in 2019, Akwashiki served as majority leader and later deputy speaker of the Nasarawa state house of assembly.
Born on August 3, 1973 in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon LGA, Akwashiki hailed from the community where he began his early life and political journey.
In a statement, Barau Jibrin, deputy senate president, “extolled the virtues of the late lawmaker”, describing him as a man of “exceptional calibre”.
Akwashiki was re-elected to the senate in 2023.
“Throughout his sojourn in the Senate, he exhibited a high sense of patriotism and commitment to the Nigerian project through his various contributions in and outside the Senate,” the deputy senate president said.
“Senator Akwashiki was a parliamentarian par excellence who worked hard to enhance the standard of living of the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial district and beyond.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family, the entire people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District and Nasarawa State in general. May God grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
