Ogun 2027 and the Need to Caution Desperate Revisionists – By Olakunle Balogun
It is clear that one of the tactics often employed by African political opportunists is to distort the sequence of events and spread misinformation in ways that serve their immediate or anticipated political interests. The level of desperation displayed by such individuals frequently leads them to fabricate stories with reckless imagination.
Upon reading the piece written by one Adegoke Adeyanju Awoso, which insinuated a rift between Prince Dapo Abiodun and Senator Olamilekan Adeola Yayi over local government elections, I quickly recognized its underlying intent—a mere ploy for political patronage.
What is striking is that many of our politicians and their supporters lack the subtlety to conceal their self-serving motives when presenting such narratives. They inadvertently expose themselves by abandoning logic and critical thinking.
It is essential to educate Awoso on the extensive and distinguished political career of Prince Dapo Abiodun, who has long been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, particularly in Ogun State. He was an active participant in the politics of the aborted Third Republic in the early 1990s and even contested and won a Senate seat convincingly.
In 2002, Dapo Abiodun contested the governorship primary of the PDP against Otunba Gbenga Daniel, narrowly coming second. Despite this, the Prince of Iperu remained active and influential in Ogun State politics.
His eventual emergence as governor in 2019, against formidable opposition and the resistance of the then-incumbent governor, highlighted his doggedness and resilience. Over the years, he has built a robust political structure across the state.
To further educate Awoso, the same political forces that Dapo Abiodun dismantled in 2019 had previously overwhelmed Senator Yayi, forcing him to retreat to Lagos. It was Governor Dapo Abiodun who provided the platform for Senator Yayi’s return in 2023, enabling him to become a senator representing Ogun West.
Moreover, the political structure that once supported Senator Adeola, which had been weakened by his 2019 defeat, was generously sustained and revived through Governor Dapo Abiodun’s appointments and patronage.
While no one disputes Senator Olamilekan Adeola Yayi’s contributions—alongside many other loyal party leaders—to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s re-election in 2023, it is illogical and misguided to attribute the entire success to one individual.
In addition, Governor Dapo Abiodun deserves commendation for his political maturity and tolerance, in contrast to the atmosphere of hostility that characterized Ogun politics before his tenure. Previous governors had created an environment so stifling that it was difficult for political ambitions to flourish.
Finally, individuals like Awoso, who seem desperate to continue benefiting from state resources, should tread carefully and avoid stirring conflict between two esteemed leaders for selfish gains. They must remember that two kings cannot rule simultaneously and should be cautious not to create unnecessary tension in our beloved state.
