Ondo state government has approved death penalty for convicted kidnappers.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Kayode Ajulo SAN while addressing the media after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akure.
Ajulo disclosed further that the Council discussed key security concerns and resolved to begin the process of repealing certain laws relating to kidnapping in the state.
The Commissioner noted that kidnapping and cultism have become major threats to safety and public order, adding that strengthening relevant legal frameworks would help deter such crimes and improve the overall security landscape.
He disclosed that proposals would soon be transmitted to the House of Assembly for necessary legislative action, including sentencing convicted kidnappers to death.
Ondo becomes the second state in 2025 to have called for death by hanging for kidnappers. In April, the Edo state governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, said kidnappers caught in the state would face the death penalty, specifically by hanging.
