Osun: Adeleke, Accord leaders fall as podium collapses during political rally

Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, and some leaders of the Accord political party escaped unhurt on Wednesday after a campaign podium they were seated on collapsed during an event in Ijebu-Jesa.

Those on the podium at the time of the incident included Kola Adewusi, the deputy governor; Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole campaign council; and other Accord party leaders.

A video posted on Facebook showed the podium collapsing shortly after a musician performing at the event stopped singing, as the governor was standing up from his seat.

The incident disrupted the event for some minutes before activities resumed.

Speaking after the incident, Adeleke said the large crowd at the rally showed that the people have confidence in the Accord political party.

He urged residents to come out and vote on election day, adding that violence would not change people’s support for the party.

“This massive presence proves that Accord has become stronger despite the defection of some lawmakers,” the Osun governor said.

“I want to applaud Barrister Pelumi Olajengbesi for pulling a strong show under Accord leaders from Ijesaland. He is the David of this generation destined to defeat all Goliaths in the opposition party.

“No amount of violence can change the love of the people for Accord; let us come out on the day of election to vote massively. Our vote is our voice.”

The event was organised to launch the “Imole Canvassers’ Group” in the Oriade LGA of Osun state.

The initiative is the brainchild of Olajengbesi, Accord candidate for the Obokun/Oriade federal constituency.

The organisers said about 10,000 canvassers would be mobilised to promote Adeleke’s achievements in Osun east.

The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August ‎15, 2026.

Adeleke, who is contesting the poll on the platform of Accord, is seeking re-election.
