Singapore president invites Tinubu for state visit
Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has invited President Bola Tinubu for a state visit.
Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), announced the invitation in a statement issued by the Nigerian Mission House in New York.
Ibrahim said Burhan Gafoor, his Singaporean counterpart, visited the Nigerian Mission House, to convey Shanmugaratnam’s invitation in a letter from the president.
The Nigerian diplomat said Tinubu’s economic reforms had attracted international attention and generated interest from countries such as Singapore.
Ibrahim compared the boldness of Tinubu’s reforms with the transformation associated with Singapore’s first prime minister, the late Lee Kuan Yew.
“His achievements are enviable and continue to generate concern to countries like Singapore to share experience in multilateralism,” he said.
“Nigeria is currently going through reform in order to transform herself to a modern contemporary state, where interests of everyone is protected and Nigerians begin to enjoy a viable proposition.”
He said Tinubu holds Shanmugaratnam in high esteem and congratulated Singapore on the reforms that transformed the country.
No date has yet been announced for Tinubu’s proposed visit, but the UN permanent representative said the president would find time to visit Singapore in the near future.
