Tinubu deserves credit for bringing back Nigeria from economic brink – Emir Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said President Bola Tinubu deserves credit for steering Nigeria away from the brink of economic collapse through his administration’s reforms.

Sanusi, however, urged the Federal Government to improve its communication with Nigerians, saying it often interprets criticism and suggestions as attacks rather than contributions to national development.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria spoke at the Oxford Global Think Tank conference convened by Arunma Oteh, where he acknowledged progress under the Tinubu administration despite the economic challenges facing the country.

He cited Nigeria’s gross domestic product growth of 4.48 per cent in the second quarter of 2026 and the decline in inflation from 30 per cent to 14.6 per cent as evidence of improvement.

Sanusi also said Nigeria’s GDP per capita, measured in dollar terms, had increased by 47 per cent since 2023, while the country’s foreign reserves had risen to about $55 billion. He, however, noted that a significant portion of the reserves was driven by volatile portfolio investments.

The traditional ruler further identified the Dangote Refinery’s contribution to exports as evidence of progress in economic diversification, saying about 20 per cent of the country’s exports came from the facility.

“I’m not a fan of politicians, but we need to give credit to President Tinubu’s administration for bringing us back from the brink,” he said.

Sanusi urged the government to listen more to public concerns about poverty and hardship rather than dismissing criticism, adding that although the reforms had laid foundations for economic stability, much remained to be done.
