Ameachi, Fayemi, Aregbesola, El-Rufai and others, what do they want? By Kayode Oyedeji

Many are called, few are choosen. When fortune smiles on you and you find yourself in very high positions in Nigeria, among millions of equally qualified and competent men, you should be thankful and contented.

But you see some men, they have been everything you can think of in Nigeria and the only way they can show appreciation is to turn themselves to political gluttons, always craving for more when they should step aside and genuinely wish their successors well.

See Rotimi Ameachi, a truly favoured man. He talks as if all he has achieved has been due to what he has. Yes, he has achieved a lot. But he has only been favoured. Apart from physical height, which he has clearly above average, there is nothing to show that he is better than all the people he has led at various capacities and levels. He has been a state speaker for eight years, governor for eight years, minister for eight years. The only thing you will expect from him is to graduate into statesmanship. Unfortunately, he is still everywhere gallivanting about as someone who should have overriding right over everyone in Nigeria..

Kayode Fayemi is bright and brilliant. There are hundreds of people who have those qualities in higher dimensions than he does in his native Ekiti and other places. He has been Governor twice for a combined period of eight years. He was a powerful Minister in the last regime for four years. What else does he want? He should take a back seat now and mature into statesmanship. There are many as good as he is willing and ready to serve as well, even in his small corner in Ekiti State.

I love Former Governor Aregbesola. I was one of his staunch supporters. He is street wise. He used to appeal to me as a restless but simple soul. God used President Tinubu to make him politically. But obviously, somehow, while he was Governor of Osun, something, I think power got the better of him. Before he became governor, he was commissioner in Lagos for eight years. After he left office as Governor, he was made a Federal Cabinet Minister for four years. As Governor of Osun, he was all-knowing. He borrowed so much that even banks forgot the importance of a single obligor limit. Today he is behaving like a power scavenger. What else does he want? He should “retire into gratitude”. Since he left Osun, religious harmony has returned. Christians and Muslims now live together happily as brothers. He is hanging around like someone who has been politically short-changed even when he has benefitted far more than anyone can deserve. What does Boda Raul still want? Instead of moving about like a rodent seeking corn on a pit, he should sit back and watch and pretend to be an elder statesman. He has had more tban a fair share of leadership. There are hundreds and thousands of people who are probably more adroit and more astute than he is that he should step aside for.

Nasir El-Rufai is an embodiment of knowledge and intellectual activism. He is far more brilliant than an average Nigerian politician. Unfortunately, he has a problem. Once he is out of power, he becomes rebellious and divisive. He turns his energy and intellects into negative ventures. He becomes angry. Again, what does he want? Sincerely, I really wished that Mallam would be part of this government. He has that depth of knowledge and energy that enables him to easily develop solutions to major and extremely intricate public issues. The only problem he has is that he easily feels undermined and he is always too eager to rock a boat once he finds himself outside of it. His God given endowment is massive and he should focus on managing it in a way that he would not become a clog in the wheel of progress.

These men want to be eternally relevant. It is either them or nothing. They want to remain politically relevant. “Bigmanism” is with a great profit and benefit in Nigeria. Not one of them is angry or uncomfortable with Tinubu today because of his economic policies. They are angry because they are not in control. They are dissatisfied because they feel neglected.

They all have access to the president and have ways of offering sincere advise to him. They should take advantage of that and stop pretending to be fighting for the ordinary man on the street.
